Alert 98 – 08 Running Casing Safely
WHAT HAPPENED:
While running 5 1/2” casing, the driller observed the derrickman placing his hands and fingers on top of the casing collar to steady the casing while trying to stab the next joint. The driller immediately stopped the operation and explained the dangers involved with placing hands and fingers on or over the shoulders of casing pins or boxes. He also showed his crewmembers the proper way to stab casing. By observing the actions of his crew and instructing them in correct procedures, the driller avoided a potentially serious accident.
